Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. What you can influence, in order, for a business with a real location or service area.

How does Google decide who appears in Maps?
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, drawn from reviews, links and mentions. You control relevance and prominence, not distance.
What should I fix first?
Start with the profile itself. A complete, verified Google Business Profile does more than any trick.
- Claim and verify the profile. Only a business with a real location or a defined service area qualifies.
- Choose the most accurate primary category. It is the strongest relevance signal you control.
- Fill in every field: hours, services, service areas, phone, website and a short description.
- Add real photos of the work, the team and the premises, and update them regularly.
- Use your real business name. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Do reviews really matter?
Yes. Reviews feed prominence and decide which listing a customer picks once they see several. Ask every satisfied customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your review form. Reply to every review, politely and specifically. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them.
Does my website affect Maps rankings?
Indirectly, yes. Your site supplies the detail that confirms what your profile says. Give each service its own page, name the areas you serve, and keep your business name, address and phone number identical to the profile. Add local business structured data so machines can read the same facts.
What about listings on other sites?
Consistent details across major directories reduce confusion about who you are. Fix duplicates and old addresses first. A handful of accurate listings beats dozens of copies.
How long does it take?
Profile fixes can show quickly. Ranking changes usually build over weeks and months and depend on how crowded your category is. Track calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile rather than a single ranking position, because rankings differ by searcher location.
