A website redesign checklist for small business

What to decide before, during and after a redesign so the new site brings in more customers and keeps the search visibility you already have.

Denne artikel udkommer på engelsk. Resten af sitet er oversat, men artiklerne er ikke, fordi et maskinoversat fagligt argument er mindre værd end det samme argument læst på det sprog, det blev skrevet på.

When is a redesign worth it?

A redesign is worth it when the site loads slowly on a phone, hides what you offer, or gets visitors who never get in touch. If the problem is traffic rather than conversion, fix search first. If the problem is conversion, a clearer page structure usually beats a new coat of paint.

What should I decide before design starts?

  1. The one action you want a visitor to take, such as a message, a booking or a quote request.
  2. The three to six services you want more of, each of which needs its own page.
  3. Who the visitor is and what they need to know in the first screen.
  4. What proof you can show that is real: projects, named clients, certifications.
  5. Which existing pages already rank, so they are not lost.

How do I keep my search visibility?

Make a list of every current URL. For each one that changes, set a permanent 301 redirect to the closest new page. Keep titles, headings and useful text on pages that rank. Submit the new sitemap and check Search Console for errors in the weeks after launch. Many redesigns lose traffic because this step was skipped.

What makes a small-business site convert?

  • A clear headline that says what you do and for whom
  • One obvious next step on every page, repeated near the end
  • Fast loading on a phone: aim for the Core Web Vitals thresholds Google publishes, which are under 2.5 seconds for the main content, under 200 milliseconds for interaction and a layout shift under 0.1
  • Real photos and real names
  • Contact options that suit your customers, including messaging

What about accessibility?

Accessible sites are easier for everyone and for machines to read. Use real headings in order, readable contrast, labels on form fields, sizes that are easy to tap, and text alternatives for images that carry meaning. It also reduces legal risk in many markets.

What should I measure after launch?

Set up analytics before launch. Track the actions that matter: messages, calls, form submissions and bookings, not only page views. Review which pages bring them in each month and improve those first.

A short checklist

  • One primary action defined
  • A page for each service
  • Mobile-first layout and fast loading
  • Redirect map for every changed URL
  • Real proof only
  • Tracking for the key actions
  • Accessibility checked
